About the Author
Slim Randles has been a newspaperman for half a century, and has been a columnist for the largest newspapers in Alaska and New Mexico. Ten years ago he began writing a weekly column, “Home Country,” for syndication. It is currently running in over 400 papers in 45 states and has a readership of 3.1 million. In addition, his hour-long radio program, also called Home Country, is now in nationwide syndication. Randles has an outdoor background, including packing mules for eight years in the High Sierra, competing as a roper and bulldogger in rodeo (many years ago), living 12 miles from the nearest road in Alaska, guiding hunters in Alaska and New Mexico, and driving a team in the first Iditarod Dogsled Race. He made the first solo dogsled crossing of Alaska’s North Slope in 1970 for the Anchorage Daily News He is ranked in the top ten nationally in senior Olympic traditional archery and has competed internationally.
Twice nominated for Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, in 2012 Randles was presented The Rounders Award by Governor Susana Martinez, New Mexico’s lifetime achievement award for arts in the West.
