NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR 2005
The 2005 New Mexico State Fair was held in Albuquerque on September 9-25. Awards were given for Hispanic Arts.

2005 Hispanic Arts Awards
Tradicion Revista, Traditional Arts Award, presented by Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts to Manuel Salas, Jr. of Albuquerque for his acrylic “Disfruten” and Jason Salazar, Taos, for his bulto, “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

Santos of New Mexico, Traditional Arts Award, presented by Debbie and Charlie Carrillo of Santa Fe to Julia Gomez, Santa Fe, for “Altar Cloth,” pomegranate-design colcha.

Merit Award presented by Jerry & Cheryl Montoya of Grants to Christine Montaño Carey of Santa Fe for her retablo “In The Footsteps of Jesus.”

The Hernandez Award of Excellence presented by Hernandez Fine Art of Albuquerque to Jacob Tarazon, Albuquerque, for his print “First Light.”

Contemporary Artist, Best of Show Award presented by Contemporary Hispanic Art Market, Santa Fe, to Arnold Puentes of Albuquerque for “The Battle” in acrylic.

 The Spanish Colonial Art Society of Santa Fe presented its Traditional Artist, Best of Show Award to Fairview, NM, artists Matthew Duran and Jean Anaya Moya for their “Una Bendicion de Dios” folk art.

Albuquerquean Brandon Maldonado received the Inspiration Award presented by the St. Bernadette Institute of Sacred Art and Dan Paulos for “The Crucifix” oil on panel.

Purchase Awards were presented by De Colores Galleria of Old Town, Albuquerque, to:

The Women’s Award of Excellence was presented to Teri Garcia of Los Ojos by De Colores Galleria, Old Town, Albuquerque, for her weaving “3x5 Tapestry Blanket, hand-woven/hand-dyed.”

David Vega Chavez, Albuquerque, received the Overall Distinguished Artist Award presented by De Colores Galleria, Old Town, Albuquerque, for his watercolor “School House, NM.”

Ramona Vigil-Eastwood of Albuquerque presented the Director’s Choice Award to Jason Salazar of Taos for his bulto “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

The Will Barrett Award was presented to Kathy Craig Rhodes of Fort Sumner by De Colores Galleria, Old Town, Albuquerque, for “True to Form,” colored pencil.

Alamogordo artist Penny Thomas Simpson’s watercolor “Kess’s Garden” received the Director’s Choice Award presented by Ramona Vigil-Eastwood of Albuquerque.

According to Ramona Vigil-Eastwood, Director of Expo New Mexico’s Art Department, Art entries in the 2005 New Mexico State Fair were up 100-plus over last year in each category:  Fine Arts had 732 entries; Indian Arts 3696; Hispanic Arts 690, and Photography 629 entries.
